Text Box: EDITORS NOTE: Members of the Lafayette Ski Club recently took a bus trip to Bittersweet in southwest Michigan. Frank Arnold lead the outing for LSC again this year. Frank does an outstanding job running this trip and I want to express my thanks to him for exposing skiing and the Lafayette Ski Club to several long time members and some perspective new members.    Hopefully as the club grows, so will our opportunity to take bus trip to Midwest ski areas.

On Saturday, January 31, 18 brave souls gathered in the Meijer parking lot at 6 A.M. in subzero temperatures to go skiing at Bittersweet, Michigan. Unfortunately, we had seven cancellations due to family illnesses before the trip, but given what happened on the bus trip, that was probably for the best.
Whoever coined the phrase, "Half the fun is getting there" obviously was not on this bus. About half an hour into the trip, I noticed that my feet were still very cold and in fact, I was still cold despite wearing layers of clothing. The other passengers on the bus felt the same way, and we discovered that the bus had not been heated before we boarded. Although the heat was turned on, the amount of heat being emitted was minimal, so it was a very cold trip. To make matters worse, we also discovered that the door to the restroom on the bus was locked. When we stopped to pick up Jennifer and Ashley in Renssalaer, we took advantage of the time to use the restroom. Two of our passengers, Charles Condon and Janice Mackenzie, were kind enough to buy hot chocolate and coffee for the group in an attempt to keep us warm. Also, Bill offered hand and foot warmers to the passengers. Text Box: Midway through our morning entertainment (the film "October Sky"), we discovered that our driver had the key to the bus restroom and were able to use it, only to discover that the toilet did not flush. We stopped at a rest stop in Michigan and were further delayed because the men's restroom was being cleaned, which meant that the ladies and gentlemen had to take turns using the women's restroom.
We were all relieved to make it to Bittersweet. Fortunately, as bad as the bus ride conditions were, the skiing conditions were at least as good, if not better. It had snowed much of the week, so there was plenty of powder. (For beginning snowboarders like myself, this was a very good thing.) The temperature warmed considerably since the morning and was quite pleasant. Everybody enjoyed the day and the trip despite our misadventures getting there. The trip home entertainment included a dining stop (Cracker Barrel was the restaurant of choice) and a great winter film, "Never Cry Wolf". While we were still cool on the bus ride home, the return trip was far more bearable. We unloaded at 10 PM tired but happy that we had a good day of skiing and interesting stories to tell.
